Day Camps
This picturesque 19th century waterside community is an ideal setting to provide a fun learning experience for almost any youth group, including Cadets, Scouts, Brownies and Girl Guides.
In this dynamic tour of Penetanguishene’s Naval and Military base, campers learn first-hand the challenges faced by those working and living at an isolated outpost in the years following the War of 1812.
- Age Level recommended: 8 to 14 years
- Program type: Half-day (2.5 hours) or Full-Day Program (5 hours)

- Minimum: 20 participants

- Chaperones/Supervisors: Free admission (1 per 5 youths)

- Fire-starting: When traveling or even just at home, being able to start a fire to stay warm and cook food was a key skill to have.
Tour description:
- Wharf / Vessels: Participants will explore the many tasks involved in keeping a ship in good order, including swabbing & holystoning the decks, taking soundings to determine the water’s depth, and learning how ships’ sails operate.
- Dockyard Area: It took a lot of work to maintain the ships and buildings at a naval outpost. Participants will have the opportunity to learn about and try their hand at a variety of skill necessary to keep the Establishment running.
- Keating House: Participants will explore aspects of 19th century domestic life at a remote outpost, focusing on the need to grow food, cook meals and work with raw materials to supply your household.
- Parade Square: Learn about the lives of soldiers and officers in the British Army of long ago. Highlights include learning military drill with wooden muskets, exploring a soldier’s Kit and touring the only original building on the historical site.
- Black Powder Demonstration (weather permitting): Participants will learn about the workings of the “Brown Bess” flintlock musket, its impact on Indigenous & Metis people, and its central role in the building of a colonial empire culminating in a live demonstration.
- Visit Tecumseth Center Museum: Visit the displays in our modern museum, and see the actual remains of H.M.S. Tecumseth, built in 1815.

Science North Camps at Discovery Harbour
Since 1987, Science North has been delivering summer science camp experiences to children in communities across Ontario. This year, these camps are coming to Discovery Harbour! Science North offers children the opportunity to get hands-on with real tools, engage in modern science, and most importantly, socialize and have fun with friends!
